6/12/2023 0 Comments Ice planet barbarian book 3Eva Green is suitably dastardly as Milady, Cardinal Richelieu's (Eric Ruf) agent and assassin. This is an adult version of the tale and Porthos (Pio Marmal) turns out to be bisexual. The violence is a lot more realistic and the would be priest Aramis (Romain Duris) isn't above using a sharpened crucifix as a torture instrument to obtain information. Great fight scenes in forests, within Cathedrals, Abbeys and even at a wedding which makes The Bride's wedding in Kill Bill seem like a quiet affair, Not a buckle is left unswashed. So are the inhabitants, many, even the well off could do with a wash, the film realistically portrays Paris in springtime 1627. While D'Artagnan (François Civil) could be forgiven for being dirty seeing as he was buried alive after a skirmish in the opening scenes, Paris itself is dirty and dusty. The Three Musketeers: D'Artagnan: This is a dark and gritty take on the Dumas novel which improves on the original plot by taking the scheming and conspiracies to an even higher level.

6/12/2023 0 Comments Embers of war logevallAn epic story of wasted opportunities and deadly miscalculations, Embers of War delves deep into the historical record to provide hard answers to the unanswered questions surrounding the demise of one Western power in Vietnam and the arrival of another. He brings to life the bloodiest battles of France’s final years in Indochina-and shows how, from an early point, a succession of American leaders made disastrous policy choices that put America on its own collision course with history. Tapping newly accessible diplomatic archives in several nations, Fredrik Logevall traces the path that led two Western nations to tragically lose their way in the jungles of Southeast Asia. Written with the style of a great novelist and the intrigue of a Cold War thriller, Embers of War is a landmark work that will forever change your understanding of how and why America went to war in Vietnam. 6/12/2023 0 Comments Ask, Tell by E.J. NoyesOr rather one person: Sabine's commanding officer, Lt. The Army and Afghanistan have one thing going for it, according to Sabine. And her relationship is hanging on by a thread. It also means she's forced to live apart from her family and her longtime girlfriend while she's deployed in Afghanistan. Not with her job, per se, but with the demands the Army puts on her life, which include, in the era of Don't Ask Don't Tell, that she hides a very big part of who she is. But she's also in the army to continue a family legacy of military service. Sabine Fleicsher wanted to be a surgeon from a very young age, and she's realizing that dream, in part, because the US Army is paying off her medical school tuition. Continuing to catch up on my reviews of EJ Noyes' books, I should probably devote some words to the first book of hers I read, Ask, Tell, the first of a three-book series. 6/11/2023 0 Comments Book farewell to manzanarPapa dies twelve years after internment, and while his death isn’t directly connected to the experience, Jeanne says that his life “ended” there. It was a very calm place to live, at the time. She lived in a nice house and lived a very peaceful life. The first setting was Jeanne’s old home, Santa Monica, California. The first setting lasted for only two chapters in the book. For many years, Jeanne shares Papa’s deep sense of personal shame, while feeling anger at his eccentric and volatile behavior. There were two main settings in the book Farewell to Manzanar. While Papa holds the family together before the war, his breakdown during internment is the strongest manifestation of the family’s dissolution it also shows his inability to maintain his personal dignity in the face of public stigma and suspicion. However, Papa’s dynamic personality makes him the vibrant and exciting center of family life, especially before internment-Jeanne recalls that during her early childhood, he always knew how to throw a party, even when the family had little money. He’s vain and quick to anger, he’s “absurdly proud,” and when the experience of internment drives him to despair, he expresses his feelings by showering abuse on his family. Headstrong and impetuous, Papa immigrated from Japan determined to make his fortune, but he never quite became economically successful in America, constantly changing his career plans and shifting his family from place to place. None of that worked (and she's still single), but it allowed Tiffany to imagine a place for herself where she could do something she loved for a living: comedy. Or at least she could make enough money - as the paid school mascot and in-demand Bar Mitzvah hype woman - to get her hair and nails done, so then she might get a boyfriend. If she could do that, then her classmates would let her copy their homework, the other foster kids she lived with wouldn't beat her up, and she might even get a boyfriend. Growing up in one of the poorest neighborhoods of South Central Los Angeles, Tiffany learned to survive by making people laugh. Available on Amazon and Bookshop, from $7.18 |
